In an exciting overnight announcement, the Sundance Film Festival revealed two Australian feature films, Clubland and Noise, will have their world premieres at the prestigious North American festival, which runs January 18-28, 2007 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Clubland will screen in Premieres, a program devoted to screening world premieres of highly anticipated films. Clubland is directed by Cherie Nowlan, written by Keith Thompson, produced by Rosemary Blight and stars the twice Academy Award nominated actor Brenda Blethyn. Producer Rosemary Blight has received support through Australian Film Commission (AFC) General Development Investment, and Clubland's script was developed with AFC assistance.
Noise will screen in the World Cinema Competition: Dramatic, a competitive section of the festival focused on exceptional independent filmmaking from around the globe. Previous Australian films screened in this section include Wolf Creek and Chopper. Noise is written and directed by Matthew Saville and produced by Trevor Blainey, and stars Brendan Cowell in the lead role. The film was developed through the AFC's SP*RK script development program.
A/g AFC Chief Executive Chris Fitchett said, "Sundance has a long history of selecting distinct Australian films with international appeal. It's a festival where sales and exposure opportunities are abundant. The AFC is extremely proud to have supported both these films at their development stage, and we congratulate the filmmakers on this fantastic result."
The films' selection follows a recent visit to Australia by Trevor Groth, senior programmer for the Sundance Film Festival. Hosted by the Australian Film Commission's Festival Visitors Program, Trevor met with filmmakers and viewed Australian feature films eligible for selection for the 2007 festival.
Both films were principally financed by the Film Finance Corporation Australia and will be released in Australia next year by Palace Films (Clubland) and Madman Cinema (Noise).
Sundance is scheduled to announce its short film selection next week.
