A Year On The Wing, a documentary produced for international distribution by the Australian Film Commission and Australian Broadcasting Corporation, was launched today to celebrate World Environment Day.
At the launch in Melbourne, Senator the Hon Rod Kemp, Minister for the Arts and Sport, announced that A Year on the Wing, produced by Nell White, can now be accessed at ABC Online at www.abc.net.au/docos.
A Year on the Wing was produced under the new Australian Film Commission/Australian Broadcasting Corporation Documentary Online Initiative.
A total of four projects will go online this year. The documentaries have been specifically developed and produced for web-streaming and hosting on ABC Online.
"The AFC/ABC Documentary Online Initiative was established to encourage exciting and adventurous projects that exploit the possibilities of the Internet and challenge conventional documentary forms, and this is exactly what has been achieved," said Kim Dalton, Chief Executive of the AFC. "A Year on the Wing is enormously original and creative."
A Year on the Wing takes viewers on an astounding journey with over two million wading birds - the Eastern Curlew which is the largest of the migratory waders - as they attempt their 25,000 kilometre annual migration from Siberia to the Southern Pacific and back.
The project tells the story of the birds' journey as it unfolds in real time. As the birds continue their southern migration and then return north, additional 'chapters' of the documentary will become available online. It will be updated every two months over the period of a year and is designed to involve the ongoing participation of schools and other communities along the migratory path.
"A Year on the Wing represents an exciting development in documentaries. It not only invites users to follow the birds on their journey, but it also offers them the capacity to contribute, adding their own insights, participating in forums and interacting with other communities along the Flyway," said producer and co-writer Nell White.
The documentary has many interactive elements, which invite the audience to engage with the content, making the documentary a place for people to contribute and share their stories, information, observations, art-work and argument.
Director of ABC New Media, Lynley Marshall, said the interactive and innovative content of projects like A Year on the Wing is exactly what the Documentary Online Initiative aimed to deliver.
"This collaboration with the AFC is providing more opportunities for content developers to explore new delivery platforms and for our audiences to engage with unique content. A Year on the Wing is a great example of how this initiative is helping to bridge the gap between the traditional medium of documentary film making and the Internet," she said.
The creative team behind A Year on the Wing is producer/co-writer Nell White, writer Meme McDonald, director Kate Clere, multi media designer Tobie Cameron, Technical Director John Pierce and Interactive Director Helen Vivian. A Year on the Wing is produced by Consuello Productions with the assistance of the Australian Film Commission, ABC New Media and Environment Australia
