Documentaries Go On-Line

6 March 2001

The Australian Film Commission and Australian Broadcasting Corporation received an overwhelming response nationally with 116 applications to their DOCUMENTARY ONLINE INITIATIVE.

From these, 11 projects have been shortlisted for further development under the groundbreaking Documentary Online Initiative, a joint Australian Film Commission and Australian Broadcasting Corporation venture.

Four of the 11 shortlisted projects will ultimately be selected to be specifically produced for web-streaming and hosting on ABC ONLINE.

The successful projects and their key creative teams are:

ART IN THE MAKING - Phillip Dean/Rob Wellington
From a sketch to a drawing to a painting, artists explain their creative processes and the influences that come to bear on their masterpieces.

ESCAPE TO FREEDOM - Sohail Dahdal/David Goldie
An exploration of the complex challenge Australia faces in responding to the plight of refugees.

FISHBONE - Gina Williams/Ivon Green
The adventures of Milli the "Chat Queen of Bassendon" as she meets up with her internet chat friends of the past six and a half years, a self named group known as "The Fishboners".

HOMELESS - Trevor Graham/Rosa Hesp/Rob Wellington
An experiential web-site telling the stories of six individuals trapped in a state of homelessness in their booming global cities.

THE ILLUSTRATORS OF CRIME - Emma Crimmings
A pictorial history exploring some of Australia's major trials and criminals through the experiences of court illustrators.

LIVING WITH THE PAST - Chris Hill/Melanie Byres/Rick Mason
The story of the Forest River aboriginal massacre and the struggle of a contemporary family trying to come to terms with a tragic past.

THE PURE DROP - Thomas Ashelford
Three Australians go in search of the folk music that is a part of their cultural heritage - a quest to find "the pure drop", a living tradition of communal music.

RESTLESS - Heather Croall
The personal journeys of two Down Syndrome dancers, Ziggy and Rachel, members of Restless Dance Company.

REVOLVING DOOR - David and Alexandra Beesley/Angela Borelli
The world of street prostitution, with Gillian as a guide through the history and present state of play in Melbourne's red light district.

THE WRONG CROWD - Debra Beattie
"Queensland is a state so relaxed, so comfortable and so easy going it would rather just roll over in the sun than deal with the dark truth of injustices and corruption" - a personal history as told by Debra Beattie.

A YEAR ON THE WING - Nell White
An extraordinary journey with over two million wading birds as they attempt their annual migration from the Southern Pacific to Siberia and back.

The AFC/ABC Documentary Online Initiative was established to encourage exciting and adventurous projects that exploit the possibilities of the Internet and challenge conventional documentary forms.
